Estimate: 6'000 EUR   |   Starting price: 3'600 EUR Price realized: 4'250 EUR
MYSIEN. KYZIKOS. Electrum Stater, 450-330. The Earth (Gaia) rising out of the ground, bearing in both hands the infant Erichthonios; below, tunny right. Rev: Quadripartite incuse square. Von Fritze I 157; Greenwell 31; Boston MFA 1500 = Warren 1449. 16,01g. Scarce Somewhat narrow flan, otherwise very fine.
Erichthonios was the son of Hephaestus and Gaia (or Ge = Earth in Greek); after he was born, Erichthonios was entrusted by Athena in a chest to Agraulos, Herse and Pondrosos, daughters of Kekrops, first king of Athens; they were told not to open the lid of the chest. They violated this direction and they found Erichthonios as serpent. The serpent pursued them and, struck by madness they jumped off the Acropolis. Erichthonios was raised in the temple of Athena and was crowned king of Athens after the death of Kekrops.
